A MODEL CITIZEN OF DOUBT
The day was a bit warmer than usual, but it was winter still, and the river was completely frozen over with ice. A small group of Swinub were rooting along the bank, noses tossing up snow, looking for something to eat - mushrooms, maybe, or berries. Galen Tully, who was meandering about with no particular destination in mind, had no interest in battling or capturing the Pokémon; for now, they were content to simply sit and watch. though the hard ground was a bit uncomfortable.
Their Pidgey, Almond, seemed to agree that they shouldn't attack the Swinub. She was perched on Galen's shoulder, and she watched the Swinub with bright eyes, but she made no movement to approach them. Galen's other Pokémon, a Seedot, was tucked away in his Poké Ball, presumably sound asleep. Acorn had been very lethargic ever since they obtained him, but that was probably because he was a Grass-type, unsuited to the cold. With luck, he would liven up when spring rolled around.
Galen was well aware that they should probably get to training their Pokémon soon. But they had only just started out on their journey the day before, so why rush? They hadn't even reached the next town yet. It would be a while before they encountered a Gym, and besides, they weren't even sure they would want to battle when they did. After all, they were a Researcher. They supposed that some people found battle enjoyable, but they thought they would prefer to leave it to Trainers. Then again, though, they hadn't ever tried battling, and they figured they couldn't denounce it until they knew what it was like.
Snow crunched loudly behind them. They stiffened, but did not turn around. Whatever had made the sound was not a Swinub; it was either a different, larger Pokémon.... Or another human. Galen fervently hoped that it was just a Pokémon. Their last encounter with another trainer had ended abysmally, and they weren't inclined to repeat the experience.
Almond brushed her feathers against Galen's face in a reassuring gesture. Whatever it is, Almond isn't scared, so it can't be dangerous, they figured. Still, it would be nice if they would just leave me alone and go away....
Galen wasn't always the most reasonable person, but they realized that whoever was behind them was unlikely to just disappear. Even so, they decided not to turn around. If the approaching stranger wished to engage in conversation, they would have to start it, because Galen did not intend to have the first word.
