Legend speaks the tale of a mighty pack which hunted these lands many years ago. Its members found peace and comfort in a rich territory, under the rule of an alpha, unsurpassed in kindness and skill. Never had these wolves known an empty stomach and never had they laid eyes upon the horrors of war. Almost an entire generation passed until a disturbance rose that threatened their tranquility. No matter how sturdy the ancient oak may seem, it always falls to the determined axe.
A grave illness swept through the pack. They witnessed it in their pups, those that fell ill even before their first moon. They witnessed it in their elders, who perished before they were able to pass on their wisdom. Then wolves of all ages began succumbing to sickness, giving their last breaths at rapid paces. The pack was on the verge of perishing permanently. More than three-fourths of the once brilliantly sized population had fallen into the cold grasp of death. Only those thought to be resistant to the disease prevailed.
One night, the fabled alpha returned from a hunt to find his own son perished, having shown no signs of illness. Suspicion and insanity gripped the mind of the alpha and he turned on his companions. Eventually, in his madness, he maimed a pack-mate, accusing the wolf of murdering his son. A split formed in the pack, but with a larger number sticking faithfully to their alpha's side, those who had fought for their injured pack-mate were eventually wounded themselves and forced to retreat across the vast lake. But not before one of their number, a ferocious she-wolf, brutally slaughtered the alpha -- these outcasts, their foolish loyalty to their morals dooming their pack, became known as The Gray.
With no leadership, civil war broke out on among what was left of the pack. In the beginning, there were four combatants, each vying for the alpha position. Battles were had, many more deaths were the result. One of the belligerents went their separate way, retreating onto the frigid mountainside -- this is thought to be the Heavenheld pack, consisting of only the hardiest, most loyal wolves. Soon after, another of the wolves split away, taking with her a fraction of the original pack, those with the sharpest minds -- it is said that these wolves are the ancestors of the Frostwind pack.
In time, only two opposing forces remained. One of these wolves was significantly mightier than the other. However, evil had tainted his mind and he was driven across the lake by the other wolves before he was able to slaughter his rival, vowing that he would have his vengeance. These last survivors, having driven away the evil, took refuge in a sheltered grove.
The memory of the prodigious pack vanished, but the legend remained. The tale whispered in the winds of the valley, long forgotten.
Until now.
An elder, in his last breath. tells of the archaic pack. He, a descendant of those original outcasts, speaks of the misdeed committed against their own. Among those listening, a set of tiny furred ears. Fury and ambition boiled in the young pup's blood. He would become alpha and he would rouse his pack - The Gray, to retrieve the stolen honour of their forefathers.
