If there were two guys on the moon, and one killed the other-- |

You're binary, and desperate to deal in high figures
Verley walked, half-hunched over, down a path of a mixture of frozen dirt and snow, their knees bent to keep their feet from slipping as they trudged. Their hoodie clung to them, doing a sub-par job at keeping them warm at best, but they did not complain. Verley did not mind the numbness of the cold; the lack of feeling in their skin was an intriguing sensation that they welcomed as a change of pace, as it were. But despite that numbing chill and the calmness that winter brought, Verley was not in the best of moods. True, they were hardly ever in what one would describe as a "good" mood, or even a "decent" mood, but as their ill-equipped shoes crunched the ice under them, Verley grew more and more disgruntled. It was not where they were or what had happened in the recent past that was bothering them, but rather where they were going and what they were going to do there. They had signed up to research abroad before college, and they had been lucky enough to be sent to their first region of choice, Obstina. But upon arriving, they had received the rather unfortunate news that they were being required to obtain a "starter Pokémon" from the region's lead professor. There was no outright animosity towards the woman herself; Verley was not very familiar with her work, but certainly she would know much about their field of study. But Verley was not good with talking to people, or with requesting things from others, and this first step on their journey had already turned them sour. Why did they need a starter? Their job was to write a few papers on biodiversity, Pokémon behavior, and ecology, not to battle their trained lackeys with other people's trained lackeys. "It's a requirement," their school had said. "Insurance that you'll be protected, so that the school board won't be held responsible should something happen." As much as they were fascinated by Pokémon, Verley had never thought of themself as well-equipped to take care of them. As they reflected on their dissatisfaction for the umpteenth time whilst on their walk, Verley approached their destination: a building upon a hill, ample enough in size, with a fair amount of wooden steps leading up to the door. It was now that Verley finally took notice of their surroundings. All around they could hear the calls of Pokémon that, logically, shouldn't have been heard together; Pidgey and Swellow songs could be heard in the trees, side-by-side, and as they marched ever closer to the door, they caught a glimpse of a Patrat and a Rattata scamper into the bushes. They certainly weren't bluffing, thought Verley, remembering the pamphlet detailing the diversity found in Obstina they had received back at home. They had reached the stairs now, conveniently enough covered in ice. Verley let out a huff, their breath crystallizing into a cloud around their head. Grasping the handrail to their right with both hands, the young researcher tentatively placed one foot on the first step. They pressed down firmly before putting their other foot on the next one. It was slow going, but Verley soon enough made the climb to the door, now shivering. Letting out another sigh, the researcher knocked loudly on the door to announce their presence. "Verley Linnaeus, Class 25C," they called from outside. "Here for a 'starter Pokémon', as per their ludicrous protocols." Satisfied that whoever was inside had heard them, the young researcher reached out their hand to grab the doorknob... And promptly slipped on the porch as the door swung inwards, landing on the linoleum floor inside with a hard thunk. | Notes; Preferred starter type: Steel. |

And I Said Hello! Hello, Hello!
Professor Hickory had heard a voice at the door, she walked over to the noise and was greated by someone falling into the laboratory, She stiffled a giggle. "You must be here for a starter I presume?" She looked at the person on the floor, "Or did you just come to leave a lasting impression on my floor?" She walked over to the pokemon bank machine and entered a few things on it, this was the researcher she had been waiting for. "So here are you options." She pressed the buttons on the pokeballs and let the pokemon come on out.

You're binary, and desperate to deal in high figures
Verley grumbled as they picked themself up off the floor, rubbing their cheek. "You must be here for a starter, I presume? Or did you just come to leave a lasting impression on my floor?" How condescending. Verley wasn't amused. "The former, as you can surely tell. Unless that involves enduring unnecessarily voiced observations," Verley said tersely. They looked towards the woman, Professor Hickory, only to find that she looked less like a woman and more like an oddly-colored blur. Glasses. Verley had only just noticed their absence. They must have fallen off when they had "entered" the lab, but upon scanning the floor around their feet, Verley could not make out where their glasses had fallen. It was at this point that one of the Pokémon now standing before the researcher floated forwards. Its blurred edges focused a bit as it neared Verley, and they could tell what it was easily enough. It looked like a scarlet sword, with a single eye and a red clothlike appendage extending from its handle. Beside it lay a bronze-colored hilt, and in its single "arm" it held Verley's spectacles. It blinked its eye as it extended the appendage towards the researcher. Verley knelt down and snatched their glasses, replacing them upon their face in a single movement. They let out a huff before refocusing their attention on the task at hand. The Pokémon before them was not a native of Unova, their home region, but they were familiar with its evolutionary family thanks their school textbooks. Honedge. Global dex no. 679. This particular specimen is of alternative coloration than most of the species... Verley's gaze met the Honedge's, whose single eye looked inquisitve. Male, Verley noted. The only gendered one out of the three. Verley looked back up at the other two Pokémon, a Magnemite and a Bronzor. "Yes, well. I suppose my choices could be worse." Verley stepped back to get a better look at all three Pokémon, but as they did so, the Honedge glided forwards to meet them once again. "Hmm?" Verley glanced down twards their feet. The sword Pokémon's single, violet eye seemed to be looking back at them eagerly. "...What?" Verley scowled. What did it want from them? "Shoo, shoo." They nudged the Honedge with their foot, who floated back before returning to his previous position again. It never shifted its gaze from the young researcher, and they were beginning to wonder... Gesturing towards their glasses, Verley sighed. "If you're expecting a reward, I haven't got one." The Honedge didn't seem deterred, and Verley wasn't surprised. They didn't know why they were bothering; of course it didn't understand what they were saying, surely. The eye below them blinked. The two stared at each other for a few seconds longer, and it became increasingly obvious that this creature was not going to leave Verley be. "I see that this alleged 'choice' was only illusory. It seems that bringing this along is as mandatory as the lab visit itself." Verley turned their half-lidded gaze back to the professor. "So I suppose I will be taking this one." | ### |
