"IN MY WORLD THERE IS NO PLACE FOR WEAKLINGS LIKE YOU." | Mod | 472 words | no bug, grass, or water types please! |
It was mind-numbingly cold. As Alexis trudged to the Professor's ranch at the end of town, she tried not to think about how absolutely, positively freezing she was feeling right now. Her arms were wrapped tightly around her own body in an effort to conserve heat, but, having neither gloves, nor a hoodie, nor a scarf, nor anything to really protect her from the cold for that matter, the only thing on her mind was how the wind was biting her exposed skin. Her thin frame did little to warm her up. She almost regretted not spending some of her money on a thick jacket, just like her mother had told her to do - but she didn't want to admit that she was wrong. Ever. With a sigh, she continued walking to meet the professor, having memorized the directions she had been given back at the Pokemon Center... the warm, cozy Pokemon Center. Alexis kept on walking through the heavy snow, glancing around to appreciate her surroundings. She had never been outside of Ulmira before this, and she didn't know how to feel about it yet. She missed the hustle and bustle of the city, how everywhere you turned there was something different going on, how everybody in her apartment building had known her by name since she was a child. Whether or not she wanted to admit it, it was the people that she was going to miss the most - as a surprise to her, her neighbors had pooled some money together and gotten her a refurbished Poketech and other equipment. Looking down at her high-tech watch to check the time, she noted that it had been a nice gesture, but she didn't really need them to do that for her. She could have gotten by just fine without their help, probably. Alexis hated it when people felt sorry for her. After what seemed like ages of walking through the snow the ranch was finally in sight. Although she had spent hours poring over the many books in the Ulmira Pokemon Center regarding differing Pokemon species and their suitability for battle, Alexis was filled to the brim with anxiety. What type of Pokemon would she be offered? What if they didn't have any she liked? What if the Pokemon she ended up with was unsuitable for battle, refusing to listen to her? Years of meticulous planning could be destroyed simply by bad luck. Before she knew it, Alexis was looking up at the steps leading up to the ranch. Taking a deep breath and shuddering from the cold around her, she carefully walked up the steps. Knocking once, she waited a few seconds for a response, then called out, "Anybody there? My name is Alexis." She paused to stop her teeth from chattering wildly. "I'm looking to get a starter Pokemon?"

And I Said Hello! Hello, Hello!
Professor Hickory was sipping from a cup of steaming tea when a sharp rap on the door and the subsequent greeting took her by surprise. She hadn't been expecting anyone, but it wasn't particularly unusual for young trainers to show up unannounced. She set her cup down on the desk; the hot liquid splashed over the side, and the Professor only just managed to withdraw her hands in time. Now there was a dark puddle of tea pooling on the wood! She tsked softly, but decided she would clean it up later. The desk was already so stained that it would probably go unnoticed, anyways.
"I'm coming!" she called out, standing up and bustling over to the door. She flung it wide open, and the cheery glow from the house's interior illuminated a small, shivering girl. The Professor stepped back and ushered her in hurriedly.
"Please, come on in, dear!" she exclaimed. "In this weather, you're apt to freeze."
At first glance, the girl had seemed quite young, and Hickory worried that perhaps she was too young to go off on her own. But as the Professor looked at her in better lighting, it became clear that she was an older teenager, just very small for her age.
"So, Alexis. You want a starter Pokémon? Well, I'm happy to oblige!"
With a flourish and a toothy grin, Professor Hickory pulled the lever of the machine that kept track of all the starters. Three Poké Balls fell out, shook briefly, and then opened, revealing the Pokémon inside.
"Here are your choices!"

"IN MY WORLD THERE IS NO PLACE FOR WEAKLINGS LIKE YOU." | Professor Hickory | 510 Words | !!ARCHIVED!! Pokemon Selected: Torchic |
Alexis sighed with relief the second the professor opened the door of the lab and the warm air rushed to meet her face. Note to self, she mused silently, get better clothes. The professor seemed nice enough, though Alexis scowled at being treated like a child as the lady practically pushed her inside and began to speak reassuringly to her, as if she needed to be cooed at. As if she still wasn't ready to go off on her own. "Thank you very much," Alexis murmured, her voice sharp with impatience. She didn't have the time for idle chitchat nor for standing around gaping at all of the advanced lab equipment around her. She just wanted to come in, pick a Pokemon, and get it all over with. The faster she did it, the less time she would have to agonize over her decision. Finally, the professor showed her the three Pokemon she had selected from her. One of these would be Alexis's new partner. She looked at all of them closely, attempting to discern which one would be the best fit. The first one she looked at was the Cubone. Its skin had an odd green tinge to it - she didn't recall the photographs of this Pokemon in the books she read showing the Pokemon having his color, but then again, she could have forgotten. There were too many Pokemon for even her to remember. Crouching down to meet its eyes, she examined everything, hoping to see whether or not it would be a good fit. Almost immediately Alexis decided against it - this particular creature just didn't seem to fit her personality. It was quiet and relaxed - almost too serene, she thought. Alexis turned her face to the Pokemon at the other end - if you could even call it that. She remembered reading that Klink was a Pokemon that had been discovered relatively reasoning, and was thought to arise because of new human technology. The two gear faces twisted in perfect synchronization and haughtily looked Alexis over. If this Pokemon could talk, it would probably be saying, "Listen, you? You're not good enough for us. Try again, sweetie." She wasn't hurt by this perceived difference; in fact, she saw it as a good thing. Who would want to have a snobby, overconfident Pokemon for a starter, anyway? Having seemingly no other option left, Alexis looked at the Pokemon in the middle. The small Torchic was quite hyper, fluttering its wings while bouncing around and bumping into Cubone in an attempt to play. At first, the naughty Pokemon turned her off, but she mulled it over... she could use a source of levity in her travels. Hey, maybe it would please her mom to find out her daughter was having fun once she came back home. Also, wasn't it true that playful Pokemon became the strongest eventually? Alexis found that she had reached her decision. "I'd like the Torchic, please," she said solemnly, trying to hide the fact that she chose this Pokemon because she found it very, very cute.
